Dubai awards contract for Expo metro line extension

dubaiDubai Roads and Transport Authority has selected Alstom-Acciona –Gulermak consortium, Expolink Consortium, for the Expo 2020 metro line extension contract. Under the EUR 2.6 billion contract, the consortium will construct 15 km line extension of the Red Line. According to estimations, the works will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2016.
According to the contract, Alstom will supply 50 trains, of which 15 will serve Expo, and 35 will run on the upgrading level of service of the Dubai Metro. The company will also cater to electromechanical works.
Thales will provide the technological systems whereas Acciona and Gulermack will attend to civil works.
The Route 2020 starts off Nakheel Harbour & Tower Station on the Red Line and extends 15 km, 11.8 km a viaduct, and 3.2 km underground track. The project encompasses 7 stations including a transfer station with the Red Line, Expo Station, three elevated stations, and two underground stations.
The capacity of Expo 2020 is estimated as 46 thousand riders per hour in both directions. According to RTA studies, the ridership of Route 2020 is expected to reach 125 thousand riders per day in 2020.
