Rail Baltica intergovernmental agreement needs a fast approval

rail balticaLatvia, Lithuania and Estonia signed an agreement on closer cooperation, also on a political level, in order to speed up the Rail Baltica project, which would benefit from a quicker approval of the intergovernmental agreement.
The intergovernmental agreement would structure the necessary obligations on the state level,  allowing the implementation of the project in all three Baltic countries, as well as state the main conditions on the implementation of this strategically important project.
Under the project, the European Commission has provided EUR 238 million to Latvia for the first round of the project. By 2020, the Baltic States will receive a total of EUR 442.2 million (co-funding of almost 82%) for this project.
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have already agreed with the European Commission that, along with the works on the Rail Baltica line, the ERTMS implementation in the section between the Lithuanian-Polish border and Kaunas will be funded.
We remind that the Phase 1 of the Rail Baltica Project has already been completed by Lithuania and involved the construction of the 1435 mm gauge line between the Lithuanian-Polish border and Kaunas.
Estonia and Latvia will have to implement the Phase 2 of the Rail Baltica Project, that will start with the preparatory and construction works under the Rail Baltica which is financed by the Connecting Europe Facility.
