Qazvin-Rasht railway will be launched this year, Iran’s Gilan province Deputy Governor Mohammed Houssein Asgarean said.
An agreement to prolong Qazvin-Rasht railway to Azerbaijani Astara was also reached. According to the agreement, Qazvin-Rasht (Iran)-Astara (Azerbaijan) railway will link the railway systems of the two countries. According to the agreement, the line will be completed by the end of 2016. Goods will be transported from Bandar Abbas to Qazvin via railway. Then they will be transported to Astara by other vehicles and then – transported via the Azerbaijani railways.
In January, the head of Iranian Railways Mohsen Pour Seyyed Aghaei said that the line will be commissioned in 2017.
The line is part og North-South railway corridor, and for the implementation of Qazvin-Rasht-Astara project requires a USD 1.5 billion investment.
The first option is to connect, by rail, Iranian and Azerbaijani cities of Astara.
