Zero-emissions rail transports from Frankfurt to Bavaria. Some 2,000 metric tons of carbon emissions avoided each year.
DB Schenker Rail has begun transporting vehicle components CO2 free on behalf of Bavarian car manufacturer BMW using its Eco Plus product. The electricity needed for transports is purchased from renewable energy sources. A roughly 700 meter long freight train travels from Frankfurt am Main to BMW’s Bavarian plants in Regensburg and Landshut five times a week.
Avoid emissions altogether
“The trend toward environmentally friendly activities is increasingly important, and preventing carbon emissions is playing an ever greater role. Another important customer has opted for our green transport solution, which avoids emissions altogether instead of compensating for them using certificates,” said Axel Marschall, Member of the Management Board of DB Schenker Rail responsible for Sales.
2,000 metric tons of carbon emissions avoided each year
By converting transports to Eco Plus, BMW can reduce its carbon emissions by over 2,000 metric tons each year compared to regular rail transport. Audi, Mondelēz International, Lanxess and Vinnolit also rely on CO2 free transports from DB Schenker Rail. Eco Plus helps customers achieve their CO2 goals, and as of 2010, it is available on all German routes. The carbon-free transport option and procurement of the electricity for Eco Plus from renewable energy sources in Germany have been certified by TÜV SÜD. Each year, customers receive a certificate of their annual CO2 savings. DB uses ten percent of the additional revenues from Eco Plus to finance the construction of new power plants for generating and storing renewable energy.
The goal is to expand Eco Plus to international routes. Customers already have the option of compensating for carbon emissions generated on legs outside of Germany by combining Eco Plus with the Eco Neutral product option. DB has firmly established climate protection in its sustainable DB2020 strategy. The entire Group has set out to reduce specific CO2 emissions by 20 percent of 2006 values by 2020. The ultimate goal is for rail transport to be CO2 free by 2050.
