The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has unveiled the final development concepts for the open spaces beneath the new ‘L’ tracks between Lawrence and Bryn Mawr stations. The project is part of the USD 2.1 billion Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Phase One initiative, aimed at enhancing the Red Line’s infrastructure while creating new community spaces.
Over the past year, the CTA has collaborated with residents, businesses, and stakeholders to design public areas following the removal of a century-old, 1.3-mile concrete embankment wall. The demolition was necessary to rebuild the Red and Purple Line elevated track structure and reconstruct the Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, and Bryn Mawr Red Line stations. The newly available space spans 10 blocks from W. Lawrence to W. Ardmore avenues.
“CTA is pleased to move forward with our promise to build new Red Line track structures and four modern, fully accessible Red Line stations, while also ensuring our project serves as a catalyst for community-friendly development,” said Acting CTA President Nora Leerhsen. “The work we’re doing, with the help of local residents and businesses, underscores our commitment to enhancing the communities we serve.”
Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth added: “The 48th ward deserves community spaces that are beautiful, safe, and accessible to everyone. This once-in-a-lifetime investment delivers on that and lays a foundation for our neighbours to continue shaping the spaces, events, and connections they want to see.”
The CTA worked with Site Design Group, a Chicago-based urban design and architecture firm, to develop block-by-block plans for the space. The final design includes a pedestrian trail, dog parks, playgrounds, fitness areas, benches, and a flexible-use plaza for community events. Public meetings held in 2024 helped shape the project based on community feedback.
The final design concepts were presented to the Edgewater and Uptown communities in public meetings on 25 and 26 February. Construction of the new spaces is set to begin in 2026, with completion expected in 2027.
Progress on Red Line modernisation
CTA is nearing completion of the final major stage of the RPM Phase One project. Following the reconstruction of the northbound Red and Purple elevated track structure in 2023, work is progressing on the southbound Red Line structure and the four new, fully accessible stations.
The new stations and tracks are scheduled to open this summer.
