CAF has been awarded a significant contract by Morocco’s national railway operator, the Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF), to supply 30 modern intercity trains for the country’s rail network. The contract includes an option to expand the order with an additional 10 units and the potential development of a technical assistance and parts supply agreement.
This is the first CAF contract in Morocco and represents a major milestone for the company. The contract, valued at nearly EUR 600 million—excluding potential future options—will be financed through the Spanish government’s FIEM (Fund for the Internationalisation of Business).
The new intercity trains will be designed to operate at speeds of up to 200 km/h, offering high levels of performance and passenger comfort. Each unit will have a capacity of over 500 seats, including spaces for passengers with reduced mobility.
The CAF trains in Morocco will serve key routes in, including the Fez-Marrakech and Kenitra-Fez lines, enhancing regional connectivity and expanding passenger transport capacity.
Morocco is currently undergoing an extensive modernisation programme for its infrastructure, with a particular focus on rail transport.
This investment aligns with Morocco’s railway expansion plans ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
As part of its long-term strategy, ONCF aims to increase national rail coverage to 87% of the population by 2040, up from 51% today. This would see more than 40 Moroccan cities connected by rail, compared to the current 23.
