Hitachi Rail has been awarded a contract to deliver its cutting edge CBTC digital signalling technology for Paris metro line 12, operated by RATP.
The framework contract, which has a value of EUR 20 million for the design and installation of the new signalling system, includes options for additional orders of up to EUR 65 million, including the operational maintenance activities, which will enhance line’s capacity.
Under the contract Hitachi Rail will design and deploy wayside Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, based on RATP’s technical specifications. CBTC is the most advanced train control solution available today for metros, light rail and people movers. The technology uses wireless communication between trains and infrastructure to safely operate urban transit and subway systems more efficiently than conventional signalling insuring the best use of the assets.
“Hitachi Rail’s CBTC solutions have been successfully deployed worldwide for decades. This new contract underlines our continuous commitment to rail innovation, supporting our clients to modernize key networks such as the Paris metro, one of the busiest in the world. Our long-term partnership with RATP is supported by our technology and expertise to help improve the commuter’s daily experience as part of a more sustainable urban mobility in Paris,” François Destribois, Head of the CBTC division at Hitachi Rail in France, said.
The contract is part of the OCTYS (Open Control Train Interchangeable Integrated System) 2030 programme.
With metro line 3 already in operation and line 6 to be commissioned in 2025, the modernisation of line 12 is the third CBTC project of the Paris metro delivered by Hitachi Rail, a long-term partner of RATP for successive OCTYS programmes.
Paris metro line 12 is 17.2 km long and serves 31 stations including 2 multimodal hubs in the city centre. The line connects the Aubervilliers, a commune in the Seine-Saint-Denis department and Issy-les-Moulineaux, a commune in the southwestern suburban area of Paris.
