New trams enter service in Milan

Milan has welcomed the introduction of its new Stadler Tramlink trams, marking a significant step forward in modernising the city’s public transport network. Following an official presentation to the press on 19 February, Azienda Transporti Milanesi S.p.A. (ATM) commenced regular services with the new vehicles.

Stadler is supplying a total of 74 trams, which will gradually replace older models over the next two years. The Tramlink aims to enhance Milan’s urban mobility by improving efficiency, sustainability, and passenger experience.

A milestone for Milan’s public transport

“We are particularly proud to supply Milan’s new trams and to offer its citizens high standards of travel comfort, safety, and accessibility,” said Iñigo Parra, CEO and President of Stadler Valencia. “The Tramlink incorporates Stadler’s extensive experience in passenger vehicles and sets new benchmarks in performance, reliability, and cutting-edge technology.”

ATM CEO Arrigo Giana highlighted the importance of the investment in maintaining Milan’s status as Italy’s tram capital. “This milestone marks a further step in the innovation of our public transport system,” he said. “With a tram network spanning almost 160 km across 17 lines, these new vehicles represent the future while standing alongside our historic trams, which remain an iconic symbol of Italy worldwide.”

The first vehicle, numbered 7701, was officially unveiled at the Messina depot in the presence of ATM and Stadler executives. Today, it has entered service on lines 7 and 31.

The new Milan trams: Ehancing passenger comfort and accessibility

The new Stadler Tramlinks, recognisable by their distinctive Milan yellow livery, are 25 metres long and consist of three modules. They are the first bi-directional trams in ATM’s fleet, featuring 66 vandal-resistant seats and dedicated spaces for wheelchair users.

The fully accessible, barrier-free design includes a low-floor interior and three doors per side, ensuring easy boarding and alighting. Additionally, the doors are equipped with ramps to facilitate access for passengers with reduced mobility.

To improve safety, the trams feature large front windows that provide an extra-wide field of vision for drivers, while an advanced camera system eliminates blind spots throughout the vehicle.

The Tramlink’s pivoting bogies enable smooth navigation through the city’s tight curves, significantly reducing noise levels for both passengers and residents. The trams are also fully air-conditioned and equipped with USB sockets for charging smartphones, a modern passenger information system, and large monitors displaying real-time travel updates and general information.
