SJ has commenced operations of its first refurbished and modernised X40 double-decker train, marking the start of a major upgrade to its regional train fleet. The initiative, which will continue over the next two years, aims to improve passenger comfort with enhanced seating, better mobile coverage, and upgraded facilities.
This year marks 20 years since SJ introduced the X40 double-decker trains, which have covered thousands of miles across Sweden’s rail network. Now, in time for this anniversary, the first of several upgraded trains has entered service. The double decker trains were built by Alstom between 2004–2008.
“I am both proud and pleased with the results of this refurbishment. Our major vehicle investment is now becoming a reality. Over the coming years, we will invest SEK 19 billion in new and upgraded trains, and passengers can already begin to experience the benefits,” said Monica Lingegård, CEO of SJ.
The first modernised train is now operating between Västerås and Stockholm, with further trains set to enter service on the Linköping–Stockholm–Gävle–Ljusdal and Stockholm–Västerås–Örebro–Gothenburg routes.
SJ double-decker trains key upgrades and enhancements
The modernisation project has involved a series of improvements designed to enhance passenger comfort and convenience:
- More comfortable seating with new cushions and upholstery
- Increased legroom in all seats
- Lowered tables, making it easier to work with a laptop
- Radio-transparent windows for improved mobile coverage and connectivity
- Renovated toilets
- New lighting for a more consistent and pleasant environment
- Additional power outlets for charging devices
- Bicycle parking spaces
“The upgraded double-deckers offer a significantly improved experience for passengers. With a new interior design, enhanced seating, and better work and study conditions, these trains are a major step forward,” Lingegård added.
The refurbishment also benefits SJ staff, as the trains have been redesigned for easier cleaning and maintenance. For instance, seats can be easily removed for replacement or deep cleaning when required.
The X40 upgrade is part of SJ’s broader strategy to modernise its fleet. In total, 27 double-decker trains will be upgraded, with approximately one refurbished train entering service each month over the next two years.
Alongside SJ’s investment in new regional trains, the modernised X40 fleet will play a key role in delivering a more efficient and passenger-friendly rail network.
Service routes and availability
The upgraded trains will operate on:
