Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) is considering the possibility to build a new terminal in the Port of Anaklia which will result in expanding its terminal capacities at the port in Georgia.

The new terminal is at the development stage with preliminary assessments and analysis of possibilities being underway. Kazakhstan Temir Zholy says that parameters, implementation deadlines, the estimated budget and external investors are at the development stage. In addition, the procurement of terminal equipment in the Port of Anaklia is not considered separately as it is planned to acquire equipment after the construction of the new terminal.

KTZ emphasizes that the idea of building a terminal in the Georgian Port of Anaklia is associated with the growth of cargo traffic along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR).

“In 2024, the route reached record levels, demonstrating a 28-fold increase compared to 2023. According to PwC forecasts, by 2030, the volume of container transport along the TITR may reach 287 thousand TEU, which is 8 times higher than the results of 2024,” KTZ says.

During an official visit on February 6, to the office of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, the Prime Ministers of Kazakhstan and Georgia, Olzhas Bektenov and Irakli Kobakhidze, talked about the development of rail transport and digitalisation of this sector. During the visit, the Georgian delegation was presented digital solutions implemented in Kazakhstan in the railway industry, including the ‘Single Digital Window’ application and other smart solutions aiming at simplifying procedures, reducing the time of freight transport and ensuring transparency in the sphere of railway logistics.

On the occasion of the official event, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy and Georgian Railway singed a strategic partnership agreement which contributes to the activation of transit flows and the economies of the two countries. In addition, cooperation was established within the framework of the joint venture Middle Corridor Multimodal Ltd. established for the development of multimodal service of the Trans – Caspian international transport route.

The two parties are committed to intensify work on increasing freight traffic using available transport and logistics opportunities, while unlocking the potential of ports and terminals.

Last year, “exports from Kazakhstan to Georgia increased by 34%, with transit through Kazakhstan increasing by 40% compared to 2023. The volume of traffic between the countries in 2024 was 4.7 million tonnes. In general, over the last 4 years, freight transport from Kazakhstan to Georgia has grown 9 times, in the direction of TMTM 6 times,” the Government of Kazakhstan says.

The discussion between the two prime ministers was primarily focused on building up transit and transport interaction by unlocking the potential of the Trans – Caspian International Transport Route. It is expected that the measures taken will make it possible to increase the throughput capacity of the Middle Corridor to 10 million tonnes per year by 2027.

In addition, the importance of continuing work on establishing competitive tariff conditions, reducing delivery times and increasing the volume of cargo transported along the route was emphasised. At the same time, Kazakh companies are also involved in capacity building in Georgia. A new multimodal terminal in the Georgian port of Poti, which is being built by a Kazakh transport and logistics investment group, is scheduled to be launched this year.

“Last year, the volume of traffic on TMTM increased by 62% to 4.5 million tonnes. In order to increase the potential of the route, as well as to eliminate bottlenecks, we are working to improve infrastructure, port and terminal facilities, increase rolling stock, remove administrative barriers and create favourable conditions for carriers. The Government of Kazakhstan is determined to continue multidimensional work to ensure the dynamic development of Kazakhstan-Georgia partnership in all areas,” the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan said.

The two prime ministers also discussed bilateral cooperation on the development of trade and economic ties, expansion of cooperation in the field of transport and logistics, transport of oil and oil products, digital technologies, agriculture, tourism and others.

“This is my first and undoubtedly important official visit to Kazakhstan, aimed at strengthening economic and cultural interaction. Today there are great achievements between our states in various areas of co-operation. We are interested in further developing a comprehensive partnership with Kazakhstan,” the Prime Minister of Georgia said.

The countries aim at increasing trade turnover, a strategic step carried out under the framework of the joint Intergovernmental Commission and a road map on expanding the nomenclature of mutual trade turnover from 2023 to 2026 is being implemented. The nomenclature of exported products from Kazakhstan is replenished with new types of non-resource goods. Measures are being taken to promote 35 types of domestic goods worth over USD 66 million to the Georgian market. The list includes products of petrochemical, metallurgical industries, food, chemical industries and machine building.
