KiwiRail and Fonterra announce full return of Northland rail

KiwiRail and Fonterra have marked a significant milestone with the full return of rail services to Northland, following the reopening of the North Auckland Line in September. Fonterra has gradually ramped up its rail volume to 16 wagons per day, transitioning away from the temporary road transport operations.

“This return to full rail volume is a key moment for Fonterra,” said Santiago Aon, Fonterra’s Director of Global Supply Chain. “Rail plays a vital role in supporting our customer and sustainability commitments. By returning to rail in Northland, we are enhancing safety, reducing congestion, cutting carbon emissions, and lowering regional road maintenance costs.”

Rail transport reduces carbon emissions by 70% compared to road transport, aligning with Fonterra’s efforts to lessen its environmental footprint while maintaining the demands of its customers.

KiwiRail has also focused on improving the resilience of the North Auckland Line to support Fonterra’s operations. “We’ve made significant upgrades, including improving culverts and drainage, reinforcing slip-prone slopes, and installing nearly 500 metres of retaining structures,” said David Gordon, KiwiRail’s Chief Asset Development Officer.

“This milestone underscores the importance of a resilient rail network for Fonterra’s operations,” added Gordon. “As we return to full rail volume, we remain committed to ensuring strong on-time performance and delivering the valuable benefits of rail to both Fonterra and its customers.”

The return to rail in Northland is crucial for Fonterra’s New Zealand supply chain, and KiwiRail is dedicated to supporting its operations and environmental goals.
