Iran starts serial metro train production

Iranian-made metro trains

Tehran Wagon Manufacturing Co obtained approval for series production of Iranian-made metro trains with a 85% share of the manufacturing components to be supplied by local companies.

The manufacturer says that the successful operation of the urban rail fleet testing process is one of the bases of the successful development of metro trains and it is being implemented in utilising the necessary facilities and knowledge resources of Tehran Wagon Manufacturing.

Localisation of metro fleet production simultaneously with the development of underground network in cities is part of manufacturer’s projects to deliver domestic products across the country. In this regard, Tehran Wagon Manufacturing Company carried out extensive planning to increase the share of localisation and reduce dependence on the supply of the key systems of the metro train from foreign suppliers.

The metro train is the first generation of rolling stock with a steel body, designed and manufactured for the Tehran metro system. Each train consists of 7 carriages, some of which five are all pulling carriages. The company is working on an important project to manufacture 15 seven-car metro trains and one 8-car metro train.

By now, Tehran Wagon Manufacturing has produced a total fleet of 294 metro cars and delivered to Tehran Urban Train Company, which has so far been operated on various lines of Tehran Metro.

The company is also trying to achieve an operational solution for financing and supplying metro fleet for 4 cities.

The Iranian-made metro trains is a project that “saves mass production and reduces the cost of manufacturing metro cars,” Tehran Wagon Manufacturing says.

In 2020, the company presented a project to manufacture domestic metro trains and begin mass production to meet metro transport demand and deliver modern services. Four years ago, Iran could only manufacture less than 30% of metro cars domestically but in 2023, a permit was granted to Tehran Wagon Manufacturing Company to produce metro cars which are now operating on the 19 km Shahr-e Parand extension on Tehran metro Line 1 inaugurated in November 2023.  The Parand metro line starts from Shaahed station on Line 1 towards Parand city along a 50 km route.
