UK: Contactless ticketing expands in the South East

Starting 2 February 2025, passengers across the South East have access to contactless ticketing at 47 more stations, making train journeys more convenient and affordable. The new system guarantees the best ticket price available on the day of travel.

This change is part of a GBP 20 million government effort to modernise transport and help people travel more easily, particularly benefiting working individuals.

Later this year, 49 more stations will implement contactless ticketing, including London Stansted Airport. This means that all London airports will soon be accessible via tap-in, tap-out for the first time.

By rolling out this technology, the government aims to eliminate the complexities of traditional ticketing systems. Rail Minister, Lord Peter Hendy, emphasized that the new system will simplify travel for passengers, providing convenience and helping boost the economy by encouraging rail use.

Contactless ticketing, which was first launched at 6 Chiltern stations, has already proven successful, with over 268,000 entries and exits in the first six months. The government is working with regions like Greater Manchester and the West Midlands to extend this technology further.

The Department for Transport is committed to modernizing the UK’s transport system, making it more accessible and efficient. This contactless ticketing expansion is just one step toward a simpler, more streamlined experience for rail passengers across the country.
