Test train on new line in Perth begins

Thornlie – Cockburn Link

In Perth, the first test train has been launched on the Thornlie – Cockburn Link on January 20, 2025, marking the beginning of a rigorous testing and commissioning programme.

The test train is performed on the rail between Nicholson Road station and Carlisle station and represents a milestone for the Thornlie – Cockburn Link and is also part of the Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal project.

Additional test runs in the coming weeks will ensure all infrastructure and systems meet the highest safety and performance standards before driver familiarisation starts in the lead up to passenger services.

The first of the two Metronet projects is Thornlie – Cockburn Link project comprising of the construction of 17.5 km of new track with two stations at Nicholson Road and Ranford Road and the upgrade of Thornlie and Cockburn Central stations. When entering operation, this line will be Perth’s first east-west cross connection, making travel more flexible while providing a higher level of public transport service to Perth’s south-eastern suburbs. Connecting the Mandurah and Armadale – Thornlie lines will open new opportunities for longer-term developments around the new Nicholson Road and Ranford Road stations. The Thornlie – Cockburn Link will support growth and accessibility across the south-eastern suburbs by providing direct access to employment and recreation opportunities.

The Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal project comprises of the removal of six level crossings by raising 4 km of rail over the road at Mint/Archer Street, Oats Street, Welshpool Road, Hamilton Street, Wharf Street and William Street. The project also involves the construction of modern elevated stations at Carlisle, Oats Street, Queens Park, Cannington and Beckenham and the conversion of six hectares of former rail land into public space, named Long Park.

The crossing removal project is Perth’s first major elevated rail designed to improve public transport safety, create new and versatile public space for the community and reduce traffic congestion.

Timetables for train services and the supporting bus network for surrounding suburbs will be released before passenger services commence.
