Hamburg-Berlin: General renovation plans finalised

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has finalised the transport concept for the comprehensive renovation of the Hamburg-Berlin railway line, set to begin on August 1, 2025, and continue until April 30, 2026. The project is part of the broader S3 program, which aims to modernize and improve Germany’s rail infrastructure over the next three years.

During the construction phase, long-distance and freight trains will operate on diversion routes, maintaining connectivity between Hamburg and Berlin. Direct ICE services will still be available, albeit with extended travel times of up to 45 minutes due to diversions via Uelzen and Stendal.

For regional routes, an extensive replacement bus service will bridge gaps left by disrupted train operations. Up to 173 buses will run across 26 routes, covering a combined 86,000 kilometers daily. This initiative represents the largest replacement bus operation in Germany to date.

“To improve the condition of the infrastructure on the busy Hamburg-Berlin route and minimize recurring construction in the future, we opted for a comprehensive renovation. While this work may inconvenience commuters, we are committed to offering attractive alternatives through a robust replacement concept,” Dr. Wolfgang Weinhold, program manager for general renovation at DB InfraGO AG, said.

The renovation will include replacing over 180 kilometers of track and 200 switches. Six new transfer points will improve operational stability and flexibility, enabling faster passenger trains to overtake slower freight trains.

Key sections near metropolitan regions—Hamburg-Rothenburgsort to Büchen and Nauen to Berlin-Spandau—will be equipped with the advanced European Train Control System (ETCS) for increased capacity and efficiency.

Station improvements

Renovation plans also cover upgrades at 28 stations along the route. Improvements will include new toilet facilities, enhanced accessibility, weather shelters, and updated wayfinding systems to elevate the passenger experience.

To boost digital connectivity, DB will install radio masts along the line, enabling gigabit data rates for mobile communications. The new infrastructure will also support the Future Rail Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), enhancing onboard internet and call quality for travelers.

In February, DB will hold information sessions tailored to regional authorities and the general public, detailing the renovation plans and alternative transport arrangements. These discussions will involve stakeholders from Hamburg, Berlin-Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt, and Schleswig-Holstein.

The Hamburg-Berlin renovation is part of DB’s commitment to modernizing 1,500 kilometers of railway infrastructure by 2027. This initiative builds on the success of the Riedbahn pilot project, completed in December 2023, which demonstrated the benefits of comprehensive track and system upgrades.
