The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Silver Line is approaching the final stages of construction, with passenger service expected to commence between the end of 2025 and early 2026. This 26-mile regional rail project will connect East Plano to Terminal B at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, crossing seven cities—Addison, Carrollton, Coppell, Dallas, Grapevine, Plano, and Richardson—across three counties. The project will add 10 new stations to the existing DART transit network and is currently 85% complete.
To manage the project’s extensive scope, DART and design-build contractor Archer Western Herzog (AWH) divided the Silver Line into three construction segments. Testing began in late 2024 in Segment C, which runs from Plano to Richardson, where significant construction has been completed.
Testing will soon commence in Segment A, spanning DFW Airport to Carrollton, with trial runs of vehicles scheduled by the end of January. These tests will evaluate train performance, track integrity, signals, and crossings, ensuring safe and reliable service. DART is working closely with local cities and school districts to raise public awareness as train activity on the tracks increases.
Later this year, testing will connect Segment A to Segment B, which includes the North Dallas area. Segment B involved some of the most complex construction, including the closure of Hillcrest Road in early 2024. Full system testing across all segments is scheduled for summer 2025, following the completion of major construction milestones.
Progress on the Silver Line includes several notable developments:
- Plano: In October 2024, DART broke ground on a new 40,000-square-foot Equipment Maintenance Facility in Plano’s technology corridor. Adjacent to the Shiloh Road Station, this facility will house operations and administrative offices for the Silver Line.
- Carrollton: A new elevator tower will connect the Silver Line station with the Green Line’s elevated platform at the Downtown Carrollton Station. Construction of this tower, delayed by weather, is now slated to resume promptly in early 2025. Additionally, the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) has announced plans to extend service to Downtown Carrollton, creating a link between Denton County riders and the Silver Line. Future connections will enable transit access to Downtown Denton via DCTA’s A-train and to Downtown Fort Worth via Trinity Metro’s TEXRail at the DFW Airport North Station in Grapevine.
- Richardson: The CityLine development will see enhancements, including the addition of aesthetic arches to the bridge that spans US-75 and leads to the CityLine/Bush Station. Installation of these arches is planned for 2026, adding a distinctive visual element to the area.
The Silver Line is poised to significantly enhance regional connectivity by linking key destinations across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. With its 10 new stations and expanded transit options, the project aims to offer passengers greater accessibility while supporting urban development in the communities it serves.
