The Community of Madrid has allocated EUR 22.8 million to improve accessibility in nine Metro stations by installing new elevators and escalators. The project, part of the region’s Accessibility and Inclusion Plan for the Madrid Metro, aims to directly connect streets with platforms, simplifying access for users and enhancing mobility.
Elevators will be installed at six stations: Tetuán, Puente de Vallecas, Ciudad Lineal, Carabanchel, Campamento, and Canillejas, located on Metro lines 1 and 5. These installations will directly connect the street level to platforms without requiring passengers to pass through the station lobby. Ticket turnstiles will be placed in connecting galleries to validate transport passes.
The works, scheduled to begin this quarter, are expected to be completed within 12 months. This initiative is projected to benefit approximately 17 million passengers who use these stations annually, offering a more convenient and accessible travel experience.
Escalator additions at three stations
Escalators will also be added to three stations: Prosperidad, Estrella, and San Blas, serving Metro lines 4, 7, and 9. The Community of Madrid has dedicated EUR 3.5 million to this project, with a completion timeline of six months. These upgrades aim to enhance accessibility for over 10 million passengers who frequent these stations annually.
Advancing universal accessibility in Madrid’s Metro
Madrid’s Metro system is recognized as one of the most accessible in the world, boasting 1,710 escalators and 559 elevators, making it the most accessible in Europe and fourth globally.
In addition to this investment, modernization and accessibility improvements are ongoing at other key stations:
- Avenida de América: Installation of 10 new elevators and the creation of a new access point from María de Molina Street, connecting directly to all four lines served by the station (Lines 4, 6, 7, and 9).
- Begoña: Installation of seven elevators to provide stair-free access to Line 10 platforms.
- Ventas: Addition of five elevators, new corridors, access points, and a lobby for Lines 2 and 5.
- Santiago Bernabéu: Comprehensive modernization, including 12 new elevators and 24 escalators.
