The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, and the Minister of Transport Anthony Loke held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Mutiara LRT line project on January 11, at the Bandar Sri Pinang worksite in the George Town district, the capital of the Malaysian island of Penang. In January, SRS Consortium has been selected to build the light rail line.
The 29.5 km line to be served by 21 strategically placed stations will provide passengers convenient journey from Penang International Airport to Penang Sentral to switch to heavy rail commuter services or a direct ride to Komtar, the major exchange hub for the metro routes of the future which is also a business complex within the central business district of George Town.
The line will connect key areas of Penang Island and the mainland, enhancing accessibility and easing road congestion. Its base alignment runs from Penang South Reclamation Island A (PSR-A) with Penang Sentral and Georgetown’s Komtar as two terminals approved in October 2024. The line will ensure comprehensive coverage with trains running alternately on these routes.
Scheduled to begin operations in December 2031, the new light rail line will be able to create thousands of job opportunities, attract huge investments, and improve the quality of life for the residents of Penang.
In February – May 2025, it is expected a public inspection for Macallum to Penang Sentral and Sungai Dua depot and in June 2025 systems turnkey contractor to commence its work.
Mutiara Line LRT is now opening a new chapter for the people of Penang providing sustainable mobility in the city, strengthening the regional connectivity and supporting city’s economic growth.
“The ground breaking ceremony of the Mutiara LRT line project marks the beginning of a transformative new chapter for the state’s public transport network. With the presence of this project, it is expected to strengthen regional ties, improve mobility, and support Penang’s economic growth for decades to come,” the Ministry of Transport says.
