The Singapore Branch of Sinohydro Corporation Limited appointed Aurecon the design consultant for the design and construction of the Cross Island Line tunnels between Maju station and Clementi station.
“Our involvement from the tender design stage allowed us to provide crucial design optimisations. By minimising the cross-section profile of the mined tunnel and the footprint of the launching shaft, we will reduce concrete material usage and excavation volume, thereby increasing work efficiency while minimising construction risks,” Er. Khine Hnin Yi, Technical Director, Geotechnical at Aurecon said.
SGD 199 million (USD 147.5 million) is the value of the contract which involves the construction of twin rail tunnels, each spanning 1.4 km. These tunnels will connect the future Maju and Clementi stations part of the the second phase of the Cross Island Line (CRL), enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents in the western region of Singapore.
The role of Aurecon as design consultant includes bored tunnelling, mined tunnelling, geotechnical engineering, civil works, structures, and building services. To manage the complex geological conditions, minimise ground deformation and its impact on adjacent structures, the project will employ three Slurry Tunnel Boring Machines.
“The tunnels present unique engineering challenges, as they will run beneath key infrastructure, such as the Sungei Ulu Pandan canal. We aim to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions that will minimise the impact on the surrounding environment,” Jean-Marc Girard, Chief Operating Officer, Asia at Aurecon said.
In January 2024 Aurecon was appointed as the lead consultant to China Communications Construction Company Sinohydro Corporation Ltd Joint Venture that were awarded the contract for Cross Island Line Clementi interchange station.
The phase two of the Cross Island Line covers the construction of 15 km of line served by six underground stations – Turf City, King Albert Park, Maju, Clementi, West Coast and Jurong Lake District.
When completed, the entire CRL will be Singapore’s longest fully underground line totalling 50 km serving the existing and future districts along the eastern, western, and north-eastern corridors, connecting major hubs such as Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region.
The project is implemented into two phases and also include a 7.3 km extension from the Pasir Ris station to Punggol, in north area.
