PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK) has signed a PLN 39 million (EUR 9.1 million) contract with BBF Sp. z o.o. for study and design documentation for Poznań railway node.
The documentation will define the scope of planned works and identify specific solutions including for high-speed rail connection, the new Poznań Główny station and additional train stops. The goal is to make more efficient, more comfortable train journeys in the city area.
“We want to create an effective railway, especially in such an important hub as Poznań. The priority is the passengers, not only in the context of providing them with good service conditions, but also the transport offer they are expecting. That is why we are focusing on a broad reconstruction of track systems,” Piotr Malepszak, the Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure said.
The documentation is expected to be completed no later than 2029.
The design study will consider all options for the comprehensive reconstruction of Poznań Główny station, one of the largest and most important in Poland. The design documentation will include the reconstruction of the current station square together with Dworcowy Bridge and the building of the old station, which has not been used for years. PKP PLK plans to build additional tracks and platforms, above which there will be space for a new and more functional station. This will ensure the expected standard of passenger service, facilitating connection within the entire station. When working on the documentation, PLK will also indicate a possible support grid for the new station building. An architectural competition will be announced for the construction of the facility, in agreement with the City of Poznań. Then a decision will be made about which entity will be responsible for the implementation of the investment.
“Poznań railway node is a strategic project for which we want to prepare efficient investment for the most important junctions in Poland. We strive to ensure that the railway meets the needs of not only passengers but also residents in the best possible way, which is why, when developing the project documentation, we want to work closely with all interested parties, taking into account the respect for the history of the railway and the City,” said Piotr Wyborski, the President of the Management Board of PKP PLK.
Under the project, new stops are planned to be constructed in Poznań and its metropolitan area with possibility to build new facilities in five districts. If the analysis results are positive, the new stops will increase access to the railway, encouraging the use of trains not only for occasional, but also for everyday journeys.
To fit new transport connections in the urban landscape, PLK and the City of Poznań will coordinate all of solutions which include the planned construction of the next stage of the tram route to Naramowice, so that all the developed connections and services complement each other and make public transport more attractive and easier for citizens.
The high-speed rail component of the study will specify the exact route of connection between Poznań Central station and CPK, which will build the line from the station to Krzesin, situated 180 km east of Poznań. The study will also define the optimal layout of the rail lines in Poznań agglomeration, which will allow for increasing the number of tracks in the future, including towards the Poznań Wschód, Poznań Górczyn and Poznań Starołęka stations.
The planned reconstruction of track systems, together with the installation of modern control devices, will contribute to improving the capacity of the entire junction. The implementation will allow the introduction of additional trains which will determine the increase of passenger number. In order to increase the level of safety and improve road traffic, PLK will analyse the possibility of replacing rail-road crossings with grade-separated intersections.
In 2020, WYG International was awarded the contract for preliminary feasibility study for Poznań Railway Junction and in 2024, a supervision contract has been signed for the modernisation of Poznań rail freight bypass.
The development of Poznań railway node will provide additional capacity which “will not be exhausted for the next 100 years allowing 1,000 trains per day, twice as many as at present,” Piotr Malepszak explained.
In terms of passengers, Poznań is the second largest railway junctions in Poland which “in 2022 served 22 million passengers and a year later almost 3 million more. This trend indicates that soon over 30 million passengers will pass through the Poznań station. A comprehensive reconstruction of the entire junction is therefore necessary,” the Mayor of Poznań, Jacek Jaśkowiak, said.
Poznań Central Station Station is one of the largest railway stations in Poland ranked the second after Wrocław Central station. It currently receives and dispatches 450 long-distance and regional trains per day. The station is used by 62,000 passengers daily.
