Design contract for section track-doubling on Rijeka–Zagreb route

Skradnik – Krasica – Tijani rail

Croatian rail infrastructure manager, HŽ Infrastruktura signed a contract for the development of a preliminary design for the construction of the second track on Skradnik – Krasica – Tijani rail section.

The EUR 3 million contract was signed on November 4, 2024, with a consortium of Granova, ŽPD, BBD-Bridge & Building Design and Geotehnički studio. The contract includes the execution of preparatory works such as geodetic and geotechnical investigation works, the development of preliminary design documentation, studies, and obtaining of the location permit.

The consortium should deliver their concept development project within the next 15 months.

The newly planned railway line on the 72 km Skradnik – Krasica – Tijani rail section is located in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar and Karlovac counties and is an integral part of the railway route from Rijeka to Zagreb.

According to the defined guidelines for the development of the Trans-European Transport Network, the new line is an integral part of as many as three transport corridors out of a total of nine. The line is situated on the Baltic Sea – Adriatic Sea, the Mediterranean Corridor and the Western Balkans – Eastern Mediterranean, making it part of the most important railway connection connecting cities and transport hubs.

The construction of a new double-track railway will remove bottlenecks, create an integrated and interoperable traffic along the Rijeka – Zagreb – Budapest route, while improving rail services and capacity, as well as shortening the travel times. The project will also create a competitive rail transport with the possibility of further development, as well as creating prerequisites for the development of other economic sectors.

The track -doubling project of Skradnik – Krasica – Tijani rail section is 85% co-financed by the EU through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), while the remaining part is financed from the State Budget. Under the 2022 CEF Transport call for proposals HŽ Infrastruktura secured a EUR 4.9 million financing to prepare the designs for the new double-track railway line on section Skradnik – Krasica – Tijani.

The line is designed for speeds of up to 160 km/h with the project including the construction of connection sections and lines with the existing rail network, as well as new bridges, viaducts and tunnels, stations and underpasses and overpasses.
