CAF closes two new contract extensions in the Netherlands and Italy

CAF closed two agreements to increase the number of units in projects it is currently carrying out. On the one hand, it will supply the Dutch operator GVB with 13 additional trains for the Amsterdam metro, and on the other, it will increase the number of units in the new tram network for the city of Palermo. The combined value of both operations is around EUR 130 million.

CAF will supply 13 additional units to the Amsterdam Metro

GVB, the operator responsible for public passenger transport in the Amsterdam area, has agreed with CAF to supply 13 additional metro units, of the M7 model. This is an option contemplated in the contract signed with CAF in 2018, which initially included the supply of 30 trains.

The new vehicles will be identical to the units already delivered. Each consists of 3 cars, which can be coupled to form a 6-car vehicle, and will be equipped with the CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) system, being equipped for fully automatic operation without a driver (GoA 4).

The delivery of the new metro units will enable the replacement of the oldest units in the fleet, which were also supplied by CAF in the 1990s and which have reached the end of their useful life. After the aforementioned replacement of the fleet, GVB will have modern units capable of transporting a large flow of passengers in a comfortable and efficient manner.

With this order, the total number of CAF rail vehicles for Dutch customers, delivered or on order over the past 10 years, will reach 445 units. These include the 72 trams recently delivered to GVB, and contracts for customers such as NS, the Province of Utrecht and the operator Qbuzz. In addition, there are recent contracts won by Solaris for the supply of electric and hydrogen buses to Dutch operators such as TransDev and Arriva. All of this has made the CAF Group one of the leading suppliers of sustainable vehicles in the Dutch public transport sector.

The Italian city of Palermo increases its order for trams

One year after the signing of the first contract, the Municipality of Palermo has decided to extend the agreement for the first time with the purchase of 14 additional trams. In this case, the new units will be used for the new sections D, E2, F and G of the tram network, the construction of which will be put out to tender shortly.

It should be remembered that, in the middle of last year, the joint venture formed by the Italian construction company Sis Scpa and CAF was awarded the contract for the construction of the new lines A, B and C of the Palermo city tramway, as well as the supply of units for these lines. The scope of the contract for CAF was the design and manufacture of 9 trams to operate on the aforementioned sections of the city network, with the option of increasing this supply with up to 35 additional units being considered.
