Progress for Madrid Chamartín station transformation

Madrid Chamartín station

Adif AV has put into operation the first phase of the transformation of the high-speed sector of Madrid Chamartín station having now four new high-speed tracks with their platforms and the extension of the main hall built over these tracks.

In addition, the four new tracks will allow for eight operational tracks for high-speed trains, while the expansion of the hall continues, which will make it easier to maintain the current volume of trains.

At the same time, it has also enabled a new underpass that offers high-speed passengers direct exit from the platforms to Calle Hiedra and the taxi parking, and is equipped with escalators, lifts and fixed stairs. Passengers will also be able to use the existing underpass under the Cercanías tracks to exit onto Calle de Agustín de Foxá or connect with Cercanías, metro network, VTC, rent a car and parking services.

With these improvements, the station will significantly improve its operation, as it will now has an expanded concourse to 4,600 m2 from 2,600 m2. The concourse is located on four new tracks, which will allow for 8 operational tracks for high-speed trains, and two platforms, which will make it easier to maintain the current volume of trains.

Access to the new tracks is from the main hall, via covered escalators, which connect to the new platforms, which are wider and 420 metres long for the simultaneous parking of several trains.

The transformation of Madrid Chamartín station, with an investment that already exceeds EUR 540 million, is moving forward while maintaining the service and with a constant increase in passengers.

In 2023, the station managed 36 million high-speed passengers and in 2030 it expects to reach 55 million. This transformation is completed prior to the comprehensive remodelling that will be undertaken in the station and its urban surroundings.

In this way, Adif AV continues to expand the main hall towards the north over the station tracks, both high-speed and those that serve commuter, medium and long distance trains.

Once the work is completed, the main hall will be 18,000 m2, practically double the initial surface area. Upon completion of work, the station will have 25 tracks, of which 12 dedicated for high speed trains, plus 1 for parking, and 13 tracks for conventional and commuter rail services, plus 2 additional tracks at the northern end.

In the area for conventional and commuter rail tracks, work is being done on installing new track devices and modernising the signalling system.

In addition, work is continuing on extending the central underground hall to serve commuter rail tracks 12 and 13. At the same time, progress is being made on extending the main hall to the north, on tracks 6 to 13, after the extension on the first five Iberian gauge tracks is completed in December 2023.

This extension will provide commuter rail passengers with their own waiting and information area, equipped with turnstiles, from which they will access the platforms via a new 1,300 m2 covered walkway.

In the high-speed area, access to tracks 20 and 21 will soon be opened from the new main hall and work will continue on the extension of the hall above the tracks from 14 to 20, as well as on the construction of three new covered ramps for descents.

Adif will continue the work on the extension of the underpass for the exit of high-speed passengers. The part that serves tracks 20 to 25 is already operational and will be extended under the rest of the high-speed tracks. Once completed, it will allow passengers getting off a high-speed train to exit from both sides of the station, as well as having direct access to the Cercanías and metro system, through the underground Central hall and the lower Cercanías corridor.

The works to extend Madrid Chamartín Clara Campoamor station, as well as the drafting of the construction project and the modification of the security, ERTMS, communications and energy facilities in the high-speed zone, are funded by Europe, through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
