EFE Trenes de Chile, Chile State Railways, awarded two civil work contracts totalling USD 813 million for Melipilla train project that will connect Melipilla and Santiago.
Under a USD 345 million, EFE awarded the Spanish company Sacyr was awarded the Melipilla – Malloco section for which five bids have been evaluated.
The Spanish-Chilean consortium made up of Dragados and Besalco won a USD 468 million contract for Malloco – Lo Errázuriz rail section, for which four bids have been analysed.
“This is a rail project of great importance for the connectivity of the western sector of the Metropolitan Region [of Santiago] one that is gradually making important progress, such as the awarding of the works for the Melipilla – Malloco and Malloco – Lo Errázuriz sections,” the Minister of Transport, Juan Carlos Muñoz, said.
Following the notification of the result of the process, EFE will begin the preparation of the contracts that will allow the execution of the works to begin during the first four months of 2025. The operation of a first section between Talagante and Lo Errázuriz is projected for the end of 2027, in combination with the future station of Metro Line 6 that is under construction.
“The Alameda – Melipilla train is the most ambitious in the history of EFE and also comes to fulfill the dream of hundreds of thousands of Chileans who require safe, fast and sustainable transport,” the president of EFE Trenes de Chile, Eric Martin, said.
The line will be 61 km long with 11 stations and includes three tracks to Malloco, of which two are dedicated for passenger traffic and one for freight, and two to Melipilla, with one for passengers and one for freight, along with connections to Metro lines 1 and 6. The project consists of the construction of 49 pedestrian connections, 12 automated crossings, workshops and depots as well as the installation of signalling, communications and electrical power systems.
In addition to the award of the works for the route between Melipilla and Lo Errázuriz, a series of advances in the project have been recently completed. Among them, the tender for the underground works of the third section between Lo Errázuriz and Alameda for UD 200 million has already been published. The contract includes the construction of a new underground space for passengers in Estación Central that will connect through a 3.2-kilometer tunnel with a New Station that is planned to be built in the same commune.
