MTR launches scholarship programme

Celebrating the 45th anniversary of the commencement of MTR metro service in Hong Kong, the MTR Corporation announced the investment of HKD 5 million (USD 640.000)  to launch a student scholarship programme. The programme offers a total of 45 scholarships for local students who are interested in pursuing a career in the railway sector, encouraging them to contribute to the future development of the railway and the community. Named the “Ride to Success” Scholarship Programme, applications for the Scholarship Programme will open in January 2025. Application details will be announced in due course.

The “Ride to Success” Scholarship Programme aims to recognise and reward students with commendable academic performance, a passion for community service, and a keen interest in the railway sector. 25 quotas are allocated to bachelor’s degree students from Engineering, Transport or Logistics-related programmes of eligible local publicly-funded universities and self- financing post-secondary institutions; and the remaining 20 quotas are allocated to MTR Academy Diploma and Advanced Diploma students. Scholarship Programme awardees will receive coverage for up to the full cost of tuition to alleviate the burden of tuition, as well as diverse training opportunities, including railway-related activities organised by MTR. The Corporation hopes to comprehensively support students in exploring their potentials, broadening their horizons, and advancing their career goals.

Over the years, the Corporation has been committed to giving back to the community and is actively advancing its three environmental and social objectives, one of which is fostering advancement and opportunities. “Young people are the future leaders of the society. We are delighted to be launching this new Scholarship Programme, and through this project, we wish to encourage young people to unleash their potential and nurture more talents in the engineering and railway sectors. With their expertise, these young talents can contribute to building a better community in Hong Kong,” said Ms Gill Meller, Legal & Governance Director of MTR Corporation.

Students at the MTR Academy will also benefit from the Scholarship Programme. The Academy is committed to nurturing railway talents and fostering global railway development. It has also set up a series of courses designed for secondary school students and organised school talks to deepen students’ understanding of the railway industry. “The Scholarship Programme will provide students with opportunities for learning and training while promoting youth development. At the same time, the programme nurtures engineering and railway talents for Hong Kong and encourages their exploration of future career paths, continuing the railway’s contribution to the city’s development,” said Ms Margaret Cheng, Human Resources Director of MTR Corporation and President of the MTR Academy.

In celebration of its 45th anniversary, MTR Corporation has launched a series of activities to give back and celebrate with the community since the beginning of this year. Celebrations include a 25% train fare discount and “Double Rewards Lucky Draw” on MTR Mobile to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and MTR’s 45 years of service commencement. Earlier this year, the Corporation organised various events including the “Green T Baby Fun Day”, the “Station Rail Voyage” exhibition, the “MTR 45th Anniversary Themed Train,” and the “Chill Fun Trainival”, creating joyful and fruitful memories for the public.
