São Paulo Metro set to receive record investment

The Government of São Paulo is promoting the largest investment in history in the expansion of the subway network. In the year in which it completes 50 years of operation, it receives BRL 45.2 billion (8.24 USD billion) in public and private investments to improve and expand rail transportation, including new lines and state-of-the-art trains.

On the lines operated by the Metro, the works total 43 kilometers and 19 stations, with an investment of BRL 23 billion (USD 4.19 billion) earmarked for expansion. In addition, on Line 6-Laranja , the concessionaire is investing another BRL 18 billion (USD 3.28 billion) in a 15-kilometer stretch and 15 stations. There is also another BRL 45 billion (USD 8.21 billion) planned for the construction of lines 19-Celeste and 20-Rosa.

This is the first time in the history of São Paulo that so many projects are being carried out at the same time. Furthermore, for the first time, São Paulo has three armadillos (TBMs) operating simultaneously . There are two new lines (6-Orange and 17-Gold) and two other expanded lines (2-Green and 15-Silver), in addition to the expansion of two important stations (São Joaquim and Vila Prudente) and a new connecting tunnel between lines 2-Green and 4-Yellow.

Line 4-Yellow will have two new stations: Chácara do Jóquei and Taboão da Serra . The extension includes an additional 3.3 kilometers of track, with construction scheduled to begin at the end of this year and operations scheduled to begin at the end of 2028.

Line 5-Lilac will also have two new stations, Comendador Sant’anna and Jardim Ângela . The addendum provides for an additional 4.3 kilometers of extension and construction is expected to begin in early 2025 and delivery is scheduled for 2029. The estimated investment for the expansion of lines 4 and 5 is R$6.8 billion in total.

São Paulo will gain other new lines: 16-Violeta, 19-Celeste, 20-Rosa and 22-Marrom. The Government of São Paulo will deliver the first section of Line 6-Laranja in 2026, between Brasilândia and Perdizes stations, with 15.3 kilometers. Also this year, Line 17-Gold will be opened, which will connect Congonhas Airport to the rail network. In 2027, the second section will be delivered, from Perdizes to São Joaquim, connecting the northern zone to the center of the capital and connecting with Line 1-Azul of the Metro and 7, 8 and 9 of urban trains.

Also in 2027, the first section of Line 2-Green, from Vila Prudente to Vila Formosa, will be completed, as well as the three new stations on Line 15-Silver: Ipiranga, Boa Esperança and Jacu Pêssego. Finally, in 2028, the section of Line 2-Green from Vila Formosa to Penha will come into operation.

Record investment for São Paulo Metro expansion

Furthermore, in 2023, the Government of São Paulo registered a record investment in the expansion of the Metro , with BRL 2.67 billion (USD 500 million) invested in the works of lines 2-Green, 15-Silver and 17-Gold and in expansion projects. The investment was 27% higher than that recorded in the previous year. The budget for the continuation of these works in 2024 is BRL 4.7 billion (USD 860 million).

The investments are commitments of the current administration to improve urban mobility in the metropolitan region and the resumption of passenger demand in the train and subway system, which remains around 20% below pre-pandemic levels.
