Barcelona Sants train station

Adif AV has launched the tender for a EUR 9 million technical support contract for the comprehensive renovation of Barcelona Sants train station, a project estimated at EUR 410 million.

The aim of the contract is to provide the necessary technical support to the construction management in the monitoring and control of the correct execution of the works, also contributing to compliance with the management plans in the environmental, quality, health and safety, and traffic safety areas of Adif AV.

The contract also includes all activities arising from the verification of the technical, economic and administrative conditions and obligations of the contractor of the works, in accordance with the provisions of the regulations.

The comprehensive transformation of Barcelona Sants train station, one of the most prominent projects in railway terminals in Spain, will turn it into a strategic node for the mobility of the future in terms of sustainability, multimodality, citizen-oriented and integrated hub, into the new city model, creating inclusive, with accessible and environmentally friendly spaces.

The project configures the main station of Catalunya as a meeting point, stitched from east to west and from north to south by green spaces, permeable to the urban layout and open to the social, cultural and economic life of the city.

The first phase of the project involves the expansion of the station on the Plaça dels Països Catalans side, with a new high-speed boarding hall in the mountain-Països Catalans quadrant to respond to the actual and future increase in passengers, separating the departure and arrival areas.

Likewise, new access for Rodalies (commuter network) will be built, which will organise the departure flows, creating a new area, tours and commercial experience. In this phase, three new communication cores with the platforms will be built and three upper levels will be created, where another floor will be located with a boarding area, passenger lounges and spaces for internal use.

Another action will reorganise the interior space to speed up travel, acting on an area of ​​18,000 m2, promoting multimodality and including new commercial areas and spaces for customer service. Also, actions are planned on the façades on the sea and mountain sides to create a new flow within the building for travellers.

The first phase of the project is estimated at EUR 175.8 million.

The second phase of the project focuses on the Plaça dels Països Catalans, which will recover its original state, incorporating new green surfaces, children play areas and rest areas, responding to the concerns raised in the participatory process developed with residents and merchants. In this phase, it is planned to absorb the current road in front of the square to turn it into an extension of the public space, thus linking it with the new extension of phase one and integrating green areas.

The third project will prioritise the approach spaces to the multimodal terminal, both pedestrian and road, reorganising and adapting the urban space next to the mountain-side façade, generating a pedestrian route that will connect the Països Catalans and Joan Peiró squares and provide access to the passenger building.

A road system has also been defined on the sea-side façade that will collect the road traffic coming from the new road defined by Barcelona City Council, establishing in this part of the building a kiss&train space for private vehicles, taxis and city buses. Overall, the project includes the reorganisation of 8,500 m2 in the area around the station.
