The “Railway Expansion in the Munich Region” programme continues to gain momentum: 29 measures already being implemented, feasibility studies for a further 44 measures, according to Bavarian Railway Company BEG.
With the “Railway Expansion in the Munich Region” program, the Free State of Bavaria is making the rail infrastructure around Munich and throughout southern Bavaria fit for the future.
As part of the feasibility studies, a team of experts examined 44 measures for their impact on traffic and their structural feasibility. The expert work has now been largely completed and was presented today to experts and elected representatives from the region. Bavaria’s Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter: “The results of the feasibility studies are very positive.
In addition to the 29 measures that are already being implemented, a further 44 measures were examined. The results for 60 percent of them are positive. It was always important to me to have close involvement of the region and the specialist departments.”
As part of the dialogue forum, the Free State and DB also contractually agreed on the plans for the new Berduxstraße S-Bahn stop planned on the S2 S-Bahn line between Laim and Obermenzing. In doing so, the Free State and DB are underlining their joint desire to implement the measures from the “Railway Expansion in the Munich Region” programme as quickly and purposefully as possible.
The first results of the expert work were presented in dialogue forums in December 2021 and spring 2023. The experts have now presented the final results, which were discussed with representatives from the region. For 26 of the 44 measures examined, the experts came to the conclusion that they can make a positive contribution to future-oriented mobility development.
“These positively assessed measures must now be pushed forward. Since the federal government is only inadequately fulfilling its constitutional obligation to expand and build new rail infrastructure, I will agree the next planning steps with DB within the framework of the available budget,” emphasized Bernreiter. The minister continued: “To this end, I would like to continue the excellent cooperation with the region and shape the next important steps together.”
The status quo and results of the individual measures presented in the dialogue forums can be read in detail on the website of the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport under Rail Infrastructure – Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport (bayern.de).
The Bavarian State Government has launched the “Railway Expansion in the Munich Region” program to expand the rail infrastructure and thus make local rail passenger transport, and in particular the S-Bahn, even more attractive.
“Together with the federal government and the Free State, we want to ensure a strong railway in the Munich metropolitan region. The climate, the economy and the people will benefit from this. This is also what the recently signed planning agreement for the new Berduxstrasse S-Bahn stop stands for. It will ensure that more people can travel on the environmentally friendly train,” says Heiko Büttner, DB Group Representative for the Free State of Bavaria.
As part of the dialogue forum, the Free State and DB signed the planning agreement for the Berduxstrasse S-Bahn stop measure from the “Railway Expansion in the Munich Region” program. In the future, the new Berduxstrasse S-Bahn stop on the S2 between Laim and Obermenzing will help to better develop the urban district that has been created there with around 5,000 residents and 1,000 jobs.
The state capital of Munich is also contributing to the success of the new S-Bahn stop. It will cover half of the costs. By signing the agreement, DB and the Free State regulate the planning until the building permit is obtained.
