S-Bahn Vienna Upgrade: ÖBB construction work to take place on main line and southern line. Construction work requires closures on the S-Bahn Vienna main line (Vienna Floridsdorf – Vienna Praterstern).
ÖBB passengers who commute to Vienna from the north or south will have to prepare for major timetable changes from June 29, 2024, because ÖBB is carrying out its construction work in the eastern region in a concentrated manner in the summer.
In order to continue to bring passengers to their destination reliably and comfortably in the future, ÖBB is comprehensively modernizing numerous routes and structural systems in the eastern region by the end of 2027. The necessary construction work will take place particularly in the summer months in order to take advantage of times when there is less traffic – due to vacation and holidays – and to disrupt as few passengers as possible in their daily journeys.
A new timetable will therefore apply on some railway lines in Vienna and Lower Austria from June 29 to September 2, 2024. At the same time, three sections of the north-south axis (northern line, S-Bahn main line, southern line) will be completely or partially closed. No trains will run between Vienna Floridsdorf and Vienna Praterstern. In addition, the southern route between Leobersdorf and Bad Vöslau is interrupted.
S-Bahn Vienna Upgrade: More quality on 170 kilometers of route network
In addition to the modernization and digitization of the Vienna S-Bahn main line, platforms are being extended and siding and turning facilities are being built on the northern, northwestern and southern routes. In total, the S-Bahn Vienna upgrade will optimize 170 kilometers of route network, all of which are closely interconnected.
With state-of-the-art systems and equipment, the course is being set for the future: more S-Bahn quality and increased reliability in the overall system for the eastern region.
In addition to the expansion of the infrastructure, new trains will also be used in the future. 21 Cityjet DMLs were recently ordered for the eastern region. ÖBB will also be offering more seats for passengers in the eastern region from 2026 with new double-decker trains.
Current construction work in Vienna and Lower Austria
The first construction measures include the expansion and conversion of the S-Bahn stations Vienna Traisengasse and Vienna Handelskai, which have been running since October 2023. In addition, the ÖBB is replacing tracks and switches on the southern route between Vienna and Wiener Neustadt and extending platforms to make room for longer trains with more seats. Modernization work is also taking place along the northern line between Vienna Süßenbrunn and Strasshof.
- Within Vienna: There are no trains between Vienna Praterstern and Vienna Floridsdorf. The ÖBB is setting up a rail replacement service with buses for this route. There is a reduced train service between Vienna Liesing and Vienna Praterstern compared to the annual timetable. Alternatively, you can use the Wiener Linien. Valid ÖBB tickets are accepted on selected alternative routes.
- North of Vienna : Trains on the REX1 line (Vienna Floridsdorf – Gänserndorf – Břeclav route) will be diverted via Vienna Stadlau and Vienna Simmering at longer intervals. All other trains north of Vienna start/end in Vienna Floridsdorf or will be cancelled. The S1 line trains with the destination and start station Marchegg will be cancelled between Vienna Süßenbrunn and Marchegg. A rail replacement service with buses will be set up between Vienna Süßenbrunn and Gänserndorf. The S1 line trains, which run to/from Gänserndorf every hour according to the annual timetable, will be extended to/from Marchegg.
- South of Vienna: There are timetable changes on the southern route between Vienna and Wiener Neustadt Hbf. No trains can run on the section between Bad Vöslau and Leobersdorf. Long-distance trains are being diverted. Trains on the CJX9 line start and end at Vienna Hauptbahnhof and are being diverted between Vienna Hauptbahnhof and Wiener Neustadt. The stops at Vienna Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Baden are therefore being cancelled.
As a replacement, the ÖBB is setting up a rail replacement service with buses for the following sections of the route:- Leobersdorf – Bad Vöslau
- Leobersdorf – Mödling for the S-Bahn
- Wiener Neustadt Hbf – Felixdorf for trains on line R95
- Wiener Neustadt Hbf – Wien Liesing (for the night closure from 23:25 to 04:00)
Despite construction work, Vienna Airport remains easily accessible. The Railjet and CAT connections as well as the Vienna Airport Lines buses continue to travel to Vienna Airport. There are timetable changes on the S7 line. Trains on the REX7 line are cancelled. A rail replacement bus service will be set up between Fischamend and Wolfsthal.

In order to keep the impact of the construction work on passengers as low as possible, ÖBB is working closely with the City of Vienna and Wiener Linien. Other construction sites in Vienna, the population’s diverse forms of mobility and the impact on the overall transport system are also taken into account. The aim is to offer affected customers individual planning security.
Information posters at train stations, customer guides and distribution campaigns of a special information folder help travelers find the right connection. Communities and residents affected by construction work were informed electronically or by post about disruptions such as noise, dust and increased truck traffic at construction site entrances.

Alternatives for commuters in Vienna
Valid ÖBB tickets will be accepted by Wiener Linien in the following sections (in both directions) from June 29 to September 2, 2024:
- U1 between Leopoldau and Südtiroler Pl. – Hbf.
- U2 between Stadlau and Praterstern (due to the diversion of the REX1 trains) and U2 between Praterstern and Schottenring
- U3 between Simmering and Landstraße (due to the diversion of the REX1 trains)
- U4* between Heiligenstadt and Schottenring and
- U4 between Schwedenplatz and Längenfeldgasse
- U6 between Floridsdorf and Vienna Meidling station
- Tram lines 1, 71 and U2Z between Schottenring and Schwedenplatz
- Tram line 2 Friedrich-Engelsplatz – Taborstraße
- Tram line 25 Floridsdorf – Erzherzog-Karl-Straße
- Tram line 26 Floridsdorf – Kagraner Platz (or Floridsdorf – Kagran 5.8. – 18.8)
- Tram line 31 Brünner Straße – Jägerstraße
*In July and August, the U4 line does not run between Schottenring and Schwedenplatz. Tram line 1 and the extended tram lines 71 (daytime service) or U2Z (nighttime service) are available as replacements.
