RFI selects bidder for Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport rail link

Olbia Airport rail linkRete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) has selected a consortium led by Manelli Impresa as the preferred bidder for the construction of Olbia Airport rail link.

The consortium also includes Europea, RTP Net Engineering, ETS, Cooprogetti, SIIP and Francesco Morena.

EUR 114 million is the tender value and covers the design and implementation of the works involving the construction of a 3.4 km rail section starting from the Golfo Aranci – Macomer line, crossing the Olbia Terranova station to the Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, in Sardinia, where a new two-track head station will be built.

The project also includes a connection to the southbound line, towards Chilivani / Macomer, via a railway connection of approximately 1 kilometre.

The work also includes infrastructural strengthening interventions that will guarantee greater accessibility to the railway system by promoting integration with other modes of transport. The intervention is among the projects included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).

The selection of the best bidder will be followed by the start of the executive planning, thus marking an important milestone in the development of the project. According to project’s schedule, the new connection is expected to be opened in June 2026.

The entire Olbia Airport rail link project has a total value of EUR 231 million.

In December 2023, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) has published the tender in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) for the construction of the railway link to the Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport which will have direct connection to the Italian rail system.

The Olbia Terranova train station and Olbia Costa Smeralda airport will in the future be connected by rail services as well as bus services that can be purchased in a single transaction on all Trenitalia sales channels.

Located opposite the airport exit, the convenient bus connection takes you straight to the station in under 20 minutes.

The project is part of RFI’s interventions aimed at connecting airports to the national railway infrastructure, thus guaranteeing greater accessibility to the railway system and at the same time promoting integration with other modes of transport.
