Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 4 (TEL4) will enter passenger service on June 13, 2024, improving accessibility for commuters by linking Singapore’s newest rail line with the East Coast region. The official inauguration will take place on June 21, 2024 together with a series of activities that will also be held to mark the opening of the newest stage of the TEL.
The 10.8 km TEL2 section with seven stations will provide commuters along the East Coast area with alternative travel options. Commuters can expect travel time savings of up to 50% when using TEL. For example, a Marine Parade resident travelling to Shenton Way will take 20 minutes via TEL compared to the current 40 minutes by bus and train.
The Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 4 also extends the reach of the rail network, providing commuters along the TEL with better access to work and play options along the East Coast area. With the opening of TEL4, around 235,000 households will be within a 10-minute walk from an existing TEL station – Woodlands North to Bayshore.
In 2026, LTA plans to put into operation the 5th section of Thomson-East Coast Line in east Singapore which will have four other stations, including Sungei Bedok interchange station. The authority will also complete the Downtown Line extension (DTLe) project. The East Coast Integrated Depot, which has connecting tunnels to both TEL and DTL as well as viaducts from the East-West Line, will also open in 2026.
At the end of January 2020, LTA has inaugurated the first 3.2 km section of TEL with three stations in northern Singapore. The second section (TEL2) with a length of 13 km served by six stations was inaugurated in August 2021 and TEL3 was opened to passenger service in November 2022. The third section is 13.2 km long with 11 stations, four of them being interchange stations with all existing MRT lines.
The 43 km Thomson-East Coast Line is the 6th MRT line in Singapore adding 33 new station to the existing rail network. When fully operational (with the opening of TEL4), the line will serve 500,000 commuters daily in the initial years, with the figure rising to about one million commuters in the longer term.
