Swiss railway company CFF has decided to place an additional order for five Stadler Giruno trains, following the seven ordered in 2022.
Demand for transport between Switzerland and Italy has been growing steadily in recent years, a statement released Wednesday by CFF said. This success has prompted Ternitalia and CFF to step up their cooperation to make the international offer even more attractive to customers, especially on the Gotthard axis, and to continue its development from 2026.
As a result, SBB has ordered five additional Giruno trains from Stadler. These trains have been running successfully between Switzerland and Italy since 2020 and are appreciated by passengers thanks to their spacious and bright interiors. The investment amounts to around 170 million Swiss francs, equivalent to almost 180 million euros. The five rail vehicles are part of a contract extension right that includes a total of 92 trains that CFF has signed with Stadler.
A further seven Stadler Giruno trains have been ordered for 2022
The existing fleet of 29 Giruno trains was ordered in 2014. These trains already run between Basel and Zurich and between Lugano and Milan and continue their routes to Genoa, Bologna and Venice. A further seven Giruno trains have been ordered for 2022 and will run between Switzerland and Germany via Basel from 2026.
Once the five additional trains now ordered are delivered, CFF’s Stadler Giruno fleet will include 41 trains in 2026.
The Giruno trains are 11-car electric multi-station trainsets that are 400 metres long and can carry up to 810 passengers per seat. These trains are equipped with adjustable floors, adapted to the different platform heights in Switzerland, Austria and Italy (55 cm) and Germany (76 cm).
Each train has twice as many wheelchair-accessible seats and toilets as required by current legislation. The trains are also equipped with electric sockets next to each seat, separate toilets for men and women and a modern lighting system based on environmentally friendly LED bulbs.
