Île-de-France Mobilités, the Paris region’s transport authority, will order 103 new trains for Paris metro from Alstom.
These new metro trains, ordered by RATP, the Paris public transport authority, and worth EUR 1.1 billion, will be delivered between 2027 and 2029 and will be destined for metro lines 8, 12 and 13.
The new MF19 trainsets will be used first on line 13 of the Paris metro, then on line 12 and finally on line 8, “depending on the progress of the work to adapt the necessary infrastructure on those lines”, Île-de-France Mobilités officials said. The new trains will be equipped with comfortable seats, air conditioning, USB sockets and video surveillance. Each carriage will have three 1.65-metre-wide passenger access doors.
Second order for Paris metro trains placed with Alstom
This is the second financing agreement for the purchase of this type of train. “This second order aims to give Alstom visibility over its production plans and give it full capacity to secure its supply chains,” explain Paris transport authority officials.
The first 44 trains, destined for metro lines 10, 7bis and 3bis, were commissioned in December 2019 and the first units are due to be put into service in the second half of 2025 on line 10.
“The design difficulties have already been resolved. The production of the trainsets by Alstom remains to be monitored in terms of the supply chain difficulties the company is facing in the post-Covid context and in relation to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict,” Île-de-France Mobilités notes in the procurement project.
Subsequently, a third purchase agreement will be submitted to the Île-de-France Mobilités board for approval to complete orders on lines 8 and 12 and to meet the needs of lines 3 and 7. The latter two lines will be equipped between 2031 and 2033, according to IDF Mobilités.
