Asocierea RailWorks consortium and the Romanian rail infrastructure manager CFR SA, signed a contract for the modernisation and installation of the ERTMS Level 2 on the Caransebeș – Lugoj line.
Asocierea RailWorks consortium consists of Alstom and the Romanian civil works companies Arcada Company and Euroconstruct Trading ’98.
The RON 1.34 billion (EUR 265.78 million) contract is implemented under the project “Modernisation of Caransebeș – Timișoara – Arad railway line” financed by the Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), Component – 4, Sustainable Transport.
Alstom is set to provide cutting-edge digital train control, traffic management system, and electrification infrastructure, while Arcada and Euroconstruct will be responsible for all civil works. The contract has a 42-month implementation period, covering both the design and execution phases.

The new contract covers the modernisation of 39.56 km of the railway line between Caransebeș and Lugoj and the modernisation will enable a doubling of the entire line, electrification, infrastructure and superstructure modernisation, signalling and telecommunication systems, as well as civil works. Alstom will directly oversee the ERTMS Level 2 deployment, implementation of the digital interlocking and passenger information systems as well as electrification works including power supply and overhead contact line. The upgrade of the Caransebeș – Lugoj line will facilitate a maximum speed of 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains.
For the electrification works, Alstom will upgrade the Traction Power Station in Caransebes and will supply its OCS3 catenary solution for main lines, leveraging its inhouse capabilities at the manufacturing facility in Lecco, Italy, and its worldwide experience of OCS3 in commercial operation.
