Newag is the single rolling stock manufacturer that has submitted a bid for PKP Intercity locomotive tender covering the delivery of 46 new single-system electric locomotives. The contract also includes the provision of maintenance services, covering the first repair at the fourth maintenance level P4 which will be delivered with the participation of the operator’s employees.
As a result of the evaluation of the offer, if it is in accordance with the stipulated requirements, the manufacturer will win the contract and will deliver the new electric locomotives no later than 26 months from the date of conclusion of the contract.
The first new vehicles will be put into commercial operation in 2025 on Polish railway network.
PKP Intercity locomotive tender has been launched in August 2023 for the delivery of single-system electric locomotives capable of operating at 160 km/h and equipped with ETCS Level 2.
The PKP Intercity locomotive tender has an estimated value of PLN 1.17 billion (EUR 259.1 million).
The national rail operator continues its rolling stock investment strategy, according to which by 2030 all vehicles in the PKP Intercity fleet will be new or modernised. According to the company’s plan, they will be suitable to run at speeds between 160 and 250 km/h, which is set to become the standard.
In addition to this tender, PKP Intercity relaunched another one covering the procurement of 45 multi system locomotives and 38 seven-car push-pull double-deck trains.
In the next seven years, PKP Intercity intends to double the number of train services to meet future transport demand. The operator will invest PLN 27 billion (EUR 6 billion) until 2030 when it is expected that 88 million passengers will use PKP Intercity’s services each year, delivered by 800 daily trains. Last year, the Polish long-distance rail operator transported more than 59 million passengers, an increase of 10 million passengers compared to 2019.
