Wiener Linien, the public transport operator of Vienna ordered from Siemens Mobility 10 additional X-Wagen trains bringing the entire new generation metro fleet of 44 six-car trainsets.
The first X-Wagen train entered operation in June 2023 on the U3 line, between Simmering and Ottakring following extensive tests and receiving its operating permit.
In 2017, Wiener Linien and Siemens Mobility signed a contract for the supply of 34 six-car X-Wagen trains with an option for additional 11 metro trains equipped with fully automated operation (GOA4) and driver operation.
Under the contract, the tenth X-Wagen metro will be delivered by the end of the year, and Siemens Mobility will be handing over up to three more X-Wagen metro trains per year to Wiener Linien beginning in 2024. According to the contract, the last train is expected to be handed over at the end of 2030, and Siemens Mobility will be responsible for their maintenance for a period of 24 years.
The walk-through, barrier-free trains are air-conditioned, and the passenger area is designed to be open and bright. For the first time, the Passenger Information System Plus (PI+) with door-selective guidance has been installed to ensure optimal passenger flow.
The special and continuous lightweight construction measures across the entire design of the vehicle, significantly reducing overall weight. The vehicles feature a recycling ratio of more than 90%.
The new fully automated X-Wagen trains will also be deployed on the future U5 line, between Karlsplatz and Frankhplatz from 2026 and on the extension of the U2 line. The metro trains are also manufactured to operate semi-automated or manually on existing lines.
The new trainsets provide a new seating arrangement that creates improved ambiance and ensures barrier-free access to wheelchair spaces and multi-purpose areas passengers increased comfort and fast services while increasing safety.
The new trains will replace the ond Silberpfeil fleet, which has been also manufactured by Siemens and are in operations since 1972.
