29 stations to be improved in Chicago

Chicago rail stations29 Chicago rail stations are expected to be improved by the end of 2023 Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) announced as part of its Refresh & Renew programme which is a key initiative of the “Meeting the Moment” Action Plan.

In 2023, crews will be performing an estimated USD 6.5 million in repairs and improvements at the selected stations across seven rail lines, as well as some Loop Elevated stations.

“In addition to performing small cosmetic repairs, we’re also working to provide a safer transit environment by proactively addressing some of the larger issues before they arise,” CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr. said.

Prior to starting work at a location, the teams will perform an initial and thorough inspection of the location to identify any behind the scenes or customer, facing items that need repair and/or replacement, either immediately or in the near term.

Some of the more comprehensive improvements made as part of this programme include concrete repairs, removal of outdated fixtures and equipment, repairs to utility and plumbing lines and more.

The smaller works also include upgrades such as painting and replacing sheet metal or damaged signage, lighting upgrades, cleaning, and repair of surfaces (such as columns, walls, railings, fencing/gates, platform fixtures, etc) and power washing are also performed.

Six stations each will be improved on the Blue and Brown lines, five stations on the Red Line, four on the Green Line and two stations each on the Orange, Pink, and Purple lines, and on the Loop Elevated.

Under the Refresh & Renew programme, the authority selected, in 2022, 30 Chicago rail stations on nine lines to be improved and repaired. USD 3.5 million was the value of the investment allotted last year for these works.

The programme has been launched in 2019 as part of CTA’s initiative to maintain and enhance safety and security at stations, while offering passengers increased comfort.
