The President of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, and the Director General of Metro de Panamá, Héctor Ortega, inaugurated the 2 km branch of metro Line 2 from Corredor Sur. The new section connects ITSE station with the Tocumen International Airport.
“The branch of metro Line 2 will mobilise thousands of passengers each day including students from the surrounding institutions, INADEH and ITSE, as well as tourists and mainly benefits about 100,000 inhabitants of the districts of Tocumen, Cabuya, La Siesta, Hacienda Santa Fe, in the eastern part of the city,” the president said.
“With the branch Line 2, Panama becomes the first country in Central America and one of the few cities in South America that have a connection of the metro system, between the centre of the city and its main international airport,” Héctor Ortega said.
The trains will use the central platform of the Corredor Sur Line 2 station, making its first stop at the ITSE station, continuing to the Airport station. The trains run with a frequency of 10 minutes.
Work for the construction of the metro section has been completed in 39 months (more than three years). The GdE consortium won the contract to deliver the project. The consortium comprises Alstom (the leader), Thales, Sofratesa, CIM (Compagnie Internacionale de Maintenance) and TSO, which also has delivered the integral railway system for the partial service of the Panama Metro Line 2.
