Moscow builds its largest train maintenance facility

Yuzhnoye metro depotConstruction work is continuing on the new Moscow Yuzhnoye metro depot which will be the largest train facility in the city and is expected to become operational until the end of the year. Since 2014 the Yuzhnoye (Brateyevo-2) depot is serving the metro Line 2 (Zamoskvoretskaya Line) which is 43 km long served by 24 stations.

Together with the Brateyevo depot the new depot will be Russia’s largest metro coach repair, maintenance and operation facility. Its area of almost 180,000 m² will exceed that of the previous record holder (the Mitino depot). After commissioning, the Yuzhnoye metro depot will serve trains on the line and at the Brateyevo depot repair activities will be carried out for the entire metro train fleet. The Brateevo car repair facility will be equipped with the most modern and highly automated equipment, including a conveyor for wheelsets, electric bogies and numerically controlled machine tools that do all the work with virtually no human involvement. It will have more than 5,000 pieces of equipment – the most modern machine tools, washes, paint booths, stands for checking the details and much more.

After reaching full capacity, the complex will repair a record number of cars, wheels and engines for similar facilities in Russia.  Over 1 thousand employees will have comfortable jobs with stable income.

The new depot will make it possible to modernise the rolling stock of the Line 2 and it might receive the new Moskva-2020 trains as soon as 2024. At the facility more trains will be serviced in a faster and easier manner. Together with the new trains, the Moscow Metro also expects the depot to have a service company from the manufacturer.

“On one of the oldest and most popular metro lines, Zamoskvoretskaya (Line 2), we will create the largest car repair and operation complex in Russia. It will include the Yuzhnoye electric depot under the construction, which will service the Line 2, and the existing Brateyevo, which will take care of technically complex car repairs for the entire metro. It will improve the quality and speed of their repair, create additional places for trains to stand,” Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport said.
