Moscow Metro and Metrowagonmash signed a contract for the supply of 38 innovative shunting locomotives which are expected to be delivered from this autumn. The new locomotives will increase the efficiency and quality of metro infrastructure service and will be more environmentally friendly.
The Moscow Metro would not be able to operate at night without these innovative locomotives. They bring rails to the track construction site and remove the outdated ones. Also, they help to transport complex and heavy equipment.
The innovative shunting locomotives will deliver efficient and fast services by transporting tools and employees. They work on metro sections under the construction and are involved in tunnel washing.
The new locomotives have a spacious cab with improved noise insulation, ergonomic controls and a climate control system. They are more environmentally friendly as there are less harmful emissions into the environment. Another great benefit is an additional space for workers in the locomotive.
“We pay attention not only to upgrading the passenger train fleets but also to the service equipment fleets, which is necessary for smooth and safe metro operation. During the next two years we will purchase 38 new motor vehicles from the Russian manufacturer. They will improve the efficiency of the metro tracks maintenance and will be more environmentally friendly. They will also offer the best conditions for train drivers and employees,” Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport said.
In 2022, city’s department of transport has announced that 70% of the metro train fleet will be replaced with new vehicles. The metro operator owns 6,217 metro cars out of which 4,351 are of the new generation and by 2023, the average age of the metro trains is going to decrease from 22.5 to 10 years.
Also last year, Moscow received 44 new Ivolga 3.0 trains to operate on the MCD-3 and MCD-4 for which Metrovagonmash signed a contract to deliver the new trains. This year, 300 additional Moskva-2020 cars will be deployed on the Big Circle Line.
By the end of 2023, 80% of the metro train fleet will be renewed with new Moskva-2020 trains.
