The European Investment Bank (EIB) has under appraisal the Devínska Nová Ves rail modernisation project in Slovakia that if eligible, will receive EUR 300 million support from the bank.
EUR 750 million is the total value of the project covering rehabilitation and electrification works to comply with the TEN-T standards. Following the completion of the project, the trains will be able to run at a maximum speed of up to 200 km/h, from currently 120-140 km/h.
Transport benefits are expected from the removal of bottlenecks, shorter and more reliable travel times, increased safety and improved railway services.
Last year, the modernisation of the tracks on Bratislava Devínska Nová Ves – Kúty – state border was one of the most significant construction projects of ŽSR. In 2021, ŽSR has also carried out an evaluation part of a study covering the double track construction of Devínska Nová Ves – Marchegg rail connection at the border with Austria.
CEF Transport 2021 calls, Slovakia obtained EUR 173 million for the modernisation of the railway line Devínska Nová Ves – state border of the SK/CZ.
The CEF 2016 also provided Slovakia a EUR 4.7 million funding of the EUR 5.5 million eligible costs for studies to upgrade the Malacky – Kúty section on the cross-border railway line. Works for the section consists of track modernisation and the installation of ERTMS, the establishment of new telecommunication technologies, and the partial reconstruction of railway stops and stations. EUR 275 million is the estimated costs of all these works.
Under the CEF 2015 call, ŽSR obtained EUR 200.4 million financing to upgrade two sections, two stations and three stops on the CZ/SK state border – Devinska Nová Ves railway line, with a total cost of EUR 273 million.
The entire project covers the modernisation of Bratislava – Slovakia/Czechia border line located on the Orient – East Med CNC/ Rail Freight Corridor 7. The project is split into three sections covering Devinska Nova Ves-Zohor-Malacky (20.5 km), Malacky – Kúty (26 km) and Kúty-SK/CZ border (6.6 km).
The modernisation will connect the line to the modernised rail network in the Czech Republic removing the bottleneck at the cross-border.
Devínska Nová Ves rail line is part of the TEN-T Core Network providing cross-border connection with Austria and the Czech Republic.
