Kaohsiung City Mass Rapid Transit Bureau, Taiwan, awarded a consortium of ST Engineering, Stadler, and Siemens Mobility a contract to provide turnkey rail services for the new Kaohsiung MRT Yellow Line. Stadler is to deliver 25 fully automatic operated metro trains from its St. Margrethen site as part of the project.
Urban Solutions, a ST Engineering subsidiary part of the consortium has a share of TWD 1.4 billion (USD 45.76 million) of the contract value.
Under the consortium, Stadler will provide the trains while Siemens Mobility will supply the CBTC signalling system.
ST Engineering will be responsible for providing rail electronics solutions and above-ground train depot design, construction and equipment fit out as well as serve as the overall project management and systems integration lead. The company will also be responsible for overall project management and serve as the systems integration lead.
In addition to leading project management and systems integration, ST Engineering will provide the communications system, automatic fare collection system, platform screen doors, traction electrification system, depot design and construction, and depot maintenance equipment for the Yellow Line. The contracted scope is expected to start by late 2022 over a period of 10 years.
Stadler will deliver 25 three-car metro trains with a medium capacity, which will be “of the latest state of the art, highly energy efficient due to the specific lightweight aluminum construction and operated driverless and fully automatic (GoA4),” Ansgar Brockmeyer, Deputy Group CEO at Stadler said.
The trains will be specifically designed for Taiwan’s tropical and subtropical climate, with high humidity of up to 100 percent and extreme temperatures of up to 45 degrees.
Once completed the Kaohsiung MRT Yellow Line will provide sustainable, save, comfortable, fast and very reliable public transport for more than 40 per cent of the city’s population.
The Yellow Line will be a 22.8 km MRT line comprising 22 underground stations and one elevated station. A key addition to Kaohsiung City’s metro network, the Yellow Line links to the existing Red and Orange lines, a light-rail system and railway station, connecting the city’s six key districts, universities and schools. It will serve about 1.16 million people, nearly 42 per cent of the city’s total population, when completed.
