The Swedish state-owned rail operator SJ AB awarded CAF a framework contract for the supply of 60 regional trains with a form order for 25 Civity Nordic trains worth EUR 300 million. The first trains scheduled to be commissioned for revenue service in 2026.
The new 5-car trains are designed for regional and inter-regional service and equipped to withstand the extreme weather conditions in Sweden, in a snowy environment with temperatures falling as low as -40ºC. They will also have an increased capacity in a variant of three coupled trains which will provide approximately 1,000 available seats, securing easy access and flexibility for all types of passengers.
The trains are designed to provide large spaces for bicycles, prams and luggage.
Passenger will also benefit high level of comfort. Among other things, there will be dynamic lighting that can be adapted to time or weather. Heat and light can be adapted based on conditions such as the number of passengers and the environment in which the train passes.
The new regional trains will be equipped with connected technical systems that create the conditions for so-called condition-based maintenance.This will allow the train to continuously send signals that are analysed and evaluated in SJ’s workshops where the automatically planned maintenance measures are carried out.This leads to more efficient maintenance that gives passengers even more reliable trains.
“We will thus have trains that will tell us in advance that a component is breaking down and needs to be replaced. It can then be done in a simpler and faster way and the workshop time is reduced, which is good for both SJ and our customers” Arvid Fredman explains.
In addition, they will be equipped with 5G technology and radio-transparent windows to provide fast connection.
Civity Nordic trains are capable to run at speeds of 200 km/h and will be put into operation the Stockholm-Västerås-Örebro-Skövde-Gothenburg, Stockholm-Uppsala, Linköping-Norrköping-Stockholm-Arlanda-Uppsala-Gävle-Ljusdal and Kalmar-Gothenburg lines where they will replace the current train fleet.
SJ is committed to reduce emissions and to provide smart and sustainable services by implementing a project to upgrade its fleet and to expand the capacity of its trains to accommodate the expected demand growth. With this new train agreement, SJ has in a short time decided to invest up to SEK 19 billion (EUR 1.76 billion) in new and refurbished trains.
“Our refurbishment of the X2000 train fleet is in full swing and we currently have four fully refurbished trains in service and more will follow. In April, we signed an agreement for at least 25 new high-speed trains and now we are looking forward to this agreement, which means that we will be able to offer really good, comfortable and climate-smart regional trips in the future,” Arvid Fredman, the Vehicle Director of SJ AB said.
