Stadler and Beacon Rail have signed an agreement for the supply of 30 Class 99 bi-mode locomotives which will be operated by GB Railfreight (GBRF). The contract includes the delivery of spare parts. The new locomotives will enter operation in 2025 replacing the current diesel-only powered Class 66 locomotives.
The 6-axle bi-mode Co’Co’ locomotives are adapted to the British gauge and specifications, combining 25 kV AC electric and diesel operating modes.
The versatile hybrid locomotive, able to reach speeds of up to 120 km/h can run on 25 kV AC electrified lines with a power of 6,000 kW at wheel. In addition, they feature a high-power low-emissions Stage-V engine allowing them to operate on non-electrified lines. The Class 99 bi-mode locomotives boast an outstanding tractive effort of up to 500 kN, high hauling capability and performance. They also offer optimal visibility and an excellent working environment for the drivers, including ergonomic desks.
The introduction of these locomotives, with first in class environmental and performance benefits, underlines Beacon’s commitment to support rail freight in the UK, accelerating modal shift and builds on the strong environmental benefit of rail freight.
The new hybrid Class 99 locomotive will reduce the emissions by 50% per journey and plays a significant role in helping consumers and businesses cut their own footprints as well as supporting those looking to make greener purchasing decisions.
After delivery of the Class 99’s Beacon will have over 500 locomotives in operation throughout Europe.
For the British market, Stadler has delivered the Class 68 diesel-electric locomotive, the Class 88 bi-mode locomotive and Class 93 tri-mode locomotive, and the Class 99 six-axle locomotives is the first one entering rail freight transport segment in the UK. “We are very proud to go one-step further with the development of the Class 99, a versatile, high performance locomotive that will provide environmentally-friendly and cost-effective rail transport services, supporting modal shift to rail”, Iñigo Parra, the CEO of Stadler Valencia said.
