The U.S. Senator Alex Padilla has announced a USD 5 million federal funding for East San Fernando Valley LRT project in Los Angeles, California.
The funding will support the construction of a 14.8 km light rail line and 14 stations between the G Line (Orange) Van Nuys station and the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink station. The transit system for the Valley means better transit with improved quality and service along Van Nuys Boulevard.
“Strong public transit systems are crucial to our local economies and critical to creating opportunities in disadvantaged communities in our state. I am proud to have secured this funding to expand the LA Metro system because efficient and effective public transit means people can get to work and readily access the resources they need,” Senator Padilla said.
The first phase of the project covers the construction of an at-grade alignment line with 11 stations and the construction of traction power substations and a new maintenance and storage facility which will ensure general administration, operation and support services. The facility will be equipped to perform inspections, body and heavy repairs, cleaning and washing of LA Metro’s growing light rail vehicle fleet. The estimated cost of the project is between USD 1.6 and 2 billion.
Under the second phase, a supplemental study is to being conducted along the northern 4 km (2.5 mile) shared right-of-way segment from San Fernando Rd/Van Nuys Boulevard to Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink station. All stations will provide safe and convenient customer interfaces and site connectivity, which will reflect Metro’s systemwide state-of-the art design standards.
Currently, LA Metro has completed most of the advanced design for East San Fernando Valley LRT project and soon will release the progressive design-build procurement documentation. The Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) has been completed in 2020. The pre-construction activity will start in late 2022 and will be followed by major construction works. The first phase of the light rail line is expected to be opened in 2028.
