SJ AB, the national rail operator of Sweden and Alstom signed an agreement to supply 25 Zefiro Express high-speed trains, with an option of 15 additional trains. The contract for the first firm order is valued at around EUR 650 million. The signing contract follows the SJ’s decision to award Alstom the train contract in December 2021.
The new trains, capable of operating at maximum speeds of 250 km/h, will be delivered from 2026 onwards.
The Zefiro Express trains are designed to operate in harsh weather conditions, even when temperatures drop as low as -40C, and their cutting-edge technology will ensure that passengers will have a safe and comfortable journey. The floors in the train carriages are flat and ramp-free, which allow easy passage on, off and along the train.
The Zefiro Express high-speed trains will each have a total capacity of 363 seats, providing passengers with an exceptional travel experience. They have been ergonomically designed for maximum comfort and feature premium seating and lighting.

I am convinced that our customers will appreciate our new trains, with high speed, really good comfort with comfortable seats and good light, as well as good opportunities to both work and relax during the trip,” SJ’s Vehicle Director Arvid Fredman said.
The carriage width, electrical systems, and signalling systems have been developed with an understanding that the trains will be used long-distance train traffic between major cities in Sweden but also for cross-border traffic to Denmark and Norway.
The new vehicles will complement SJ’s refurbished X 2000 trains and will provide special areas for bicycles, good luggage and a fully equipped SJ Bistro with seating areas. All systems are technology-leading with, for example, efficient connection and radio-transparent windows, quiet carriages and the train can be moved with battery operation to handle disturbances in the power supply on the line.
