Study contract signed for a new tram line in Warsaw

ZTM, the public transport authority of Warsaw signed a technical and economic study contract for the construction of a tram extension along the Modlińska street. The PLN 1.47 million (EUR 311,000) contract was awarded to Warsaw-based Databout company which has to deliver the study within one year.

The delivery of the study is the first step for the construction of the new tram line in Warsaw for which an environmental impact analysis of the investment is needed. ZTM will need to obtain an environmental decision, prepare a construction design and obtain a building permit. But the most important is to obtain the necessary funds for project including from the European Union.

The new tram line will be an extension of the existing route running along the Jagiellońska street along the site of the former FSO car factory and ends in a loop under the route of the Home Army. Then it will run over the Żerański Canal and along Modlińska street to connect with the route from Młociny to the Vineyard.

The contractor of the documentation will propose the way the new tracks are to run through the road junction at Jagiellońska and the Home Army route. This is one of the more complicated tasks, as it may not be possible without the reconstruction of some flyovers.A cheaper solution may be to walk around the entire junction from the west along the bank of the Vistula River.

The study will also help to select the route through new housing estates in the area of Stare Świdry in Białołęka, a northern district of Warsaw. The tracks will run straight along Modlińska toKuklińskiego or viaMyśliborska, closer to the planned new housing estates on the grounds of the former house factory. It is also planned to build an additional route to the Warszawa Żerań railway stop (in Białołęka), as well as a loop for trams and buses with a transfer car park at Familijna. The technical expertise will also be used, thanks to which the Warsaw Trams checked how to use the existing bridge over the Żerań Canal.

The tram extension along Modlińska Street is a planned route which was included in the urban planning concepts as part of the “Osiedle Warszawy” workshops. In the studies for the area of Polfa Tarchomin, as well as the area of Stare Świder, the tram was indicated as the basic type of public transport.
