The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore awarded two civil contracts for the design and construction of two stations and tunnels on the Cross Island Line Phase 1 (CRL1). The two contracts worth SGD 864 million (USD 641 million).
The first contract with a value of SGD 467 million (USD 346.5 million) was awarded to Gamuda Berhad Singapore Branch – Wai Fong Construction joint venture and covers the design and construction of Defu station and its tunnels. The company is currently involved in the construction of two stations on the Jurong Region Line (JRL) as well as road tunnels between Victoria Street and Kampong Java Road for the North-South Corridor.
The second contract worth SGD 397 million (USD 294.5 million) was awarded to China Communications Construction Company (Singapore Branch). It covers the design and construction of Tampines North station and its tunnel connection. The Chinese company is currently constructing a station along the Jurong Region Line as well as the Johor Bahru – Singapore Rapid Transit System Link viaduct and tunnels.
The construction works for Defu and Tampines North stations are expected to start in the second quarter of this year, with passenger service for CRL1 slated to commence in 2030.
The Defu station is located along Tampines Road between Defu Avenue 1 and Defu Avenue 2 while Tampines North station is located between Tampines Link and Tampines Ave 11.
Excavation works at these areas are expected to be challenging as the ground conditions comprise thick and soft layers of marine clay as well as a soil-like material comprising sandy and silty clay.
This year, LTA has also awarded two station and tunnel construction contracts on the RCL1 with a total value of 861 million (USD 640.7 million).
The Cross Island Line Phase 1 will serve existing and future developments in the eastern, north-eastern and western corridors. The first phase of the project covers the construction of a 29 km long line served by 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. When completed, the entire Cross Island Line will be 50 km long with up to 30 stations and it is expected to enter passenger operation in 2030.
