FPS – H. Cegielski handed over the first two modernised SU4220 diesel locomotives and soon other two such locomotives will be delivered for final acceptance process.
The diesel locomotives of this series have been upgraded to a two-generator version with the function of supplying 3kV DC electric energy to passenger cars.They were created as a result of modernisation of the classic SM42 diesel locomotives and they now gained two modern combustion engines that meet the Stage V exhaust emission standard. They are also equipped with a microprocessor control solution improving the traction properties of the vehicles and reducing fuel consumption.The modernisation increased the safety of the locomotive’s operation, as well as its reliability while the applied solutions will reduce noise and vibrations, both those emitted to the environment and those that affect the work of drivers operating the locomotive.
“PKP Intercity plans to use the modernised SU4220 diesel locomotives both for shunting operations and for servicing passenger trains. In addition, they will be able to be used to operate trains in emergency situations related to damage to the traction network and to operate seasonal trains on non-electrified routes,” Adam Laskowski, Member of the Management Board of PKP Intercity said.
In total, the Polish rail operator will receive 13 modernised SU4220 locomotives in the third quarter of this year as part of a PLN 90.3 million (EUR 20 million) contract signed in 2019. The repair and modernisation costs for one locomotive is estimated at PLN 7 million (EUR 1.54 million).
The project is co-financed under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme 2014 – 2020, under two main projects. At the end of 2021, PKP Intercity announced it would receive EUR 112 million European funding for rolling stock modernisation and renewal programme. For the project, PKP Intercity and the Centre for EU Transport Projects (CUPT) signed the PLN 653.8 million (EUR 144.4 million) co-financing agreement in 2018.
