Hupac has acquired a 4.16% stake in the WienCont container terminal, a subsidiary of the Port of Vienna, as part of its expansion target of the network on the Benelux/Germany-South-east Europe axis.
The owners of WienCont Container-Terminal GmbH are now Hafen Wien GmbH with 91.68%, CN Logistics and Service Group GmbH with 4.16% and Hupac Ltd with 4.16%.
The company’s move underlines the importance of Vienna as a focal point for the European intermodal network with the aim of continuously expanding transports and strengthening the land bridge to south-east Europe and Turkey.
Hupac and WienCont, as the trimodal terminal with the highest throughput in Austria, have been working together for years and have developed an international hub for continental transport in Vienna over the past three years, which will now be further consolidated by Hupac’s participation.
Hupac currently runs around 50 trains per week between the WienCont container terminal and the destinations Budapest, Duisburg, Rotterdam, Istanbul/Halkali, Ludwigshafen, Geleen, Bucharest/Ploieşti and Busto Arsizio.
Supported by state-of-the-art technology, the terminal handles all types of container/trailer transports for our partners and offer a distinctive service in Austria and Europe. The terminal has a 10,000 TEU storage capacity that together with the modern technology, is handling more than 400,000 TEU per year with 3 gantry cranes and 15 container stackers on 170,000 m² of terminal.
The WienCont Container-Terminal GmbH has an 8,000 TEU slot capacity at its empty containers depot, providing clients with sufficient capacity for storage, checks and repairs. Internationally trained reefer experts are available to test and repair refrigerated containers according to current standards.
The hub is a trimodal terminal located in the port of Freudenau and is connected to the three key modes of transport rail, river and road, achieving a maximum of flexibility in terms of logistics, while saving the environment. At Vienna’s Freudenau port, the energy supply of the entire terminal was changed to hydropower.
Hupac is implementing its investment strategy covering the rolling stock and terminals network which includes construction works at the Piacenza, Milano Smistamento and Novara sites in Italy and Brwinów terminal in Poland, for which the construction started this spring.
